As part of HTMHell's festive web-themed advent calendar, @tink's thought-provoking article explores the risks of relying solely on AI-generated code for accessible web development.

This is a reminder that while AI tools can be helpful, they’re no substitute for expertise and critical thinking.

Yes! That's how you do it!

I needed to copy a file from the Braille Sense Six, an Android 12 Braille tablet note taker blind thing, and upload it to Google Drive. So I plugged it into my Linux machine. MTP opened in the Caja file manager. I navigated to the file, and pressed Control + C to copy it. I then Alt Tabbed back to Google Chrome, which was open to the Google Drive folder I needed to upload the file to. I then pressed Alt + C, then U, for upload file. I then pressed Alt + ` (grav) to switched to the popup window, pressed Control + V to paste, heard the file name, pressed Enter, and boom, it uploaded, from an external device! Ugh that's so freaking cool! I know, simple, but still! I wasn't sure it'd work.

While I fully understand artists' concerns with alt text being used to train AI on their work, this is not a problem caused by the blind and vision-impaired folks.

There have to be better ways to fight this other than throwing them under the bus. I understand that not everyone can afford an expensive lawsuit. Are there other options?

I've heard of tools like Glaze and Nightshade.

@bermudianbrit I listened as far as the question about touch screen card machines and got so cross I stopped listening. What the actual... is the Minister of Disability doing admitting that a) never heard of a screen reader before last week or b) talking about the Gov purchasing Jaws for £££ instead of NVDA? And if I hear "we are absolutely committed" one more time (from anyone) on the subject of #accessibility I'm going to scream.

What convinced you to start adding alt text to images you post online?

I’m getting really fed up with Meta AI on my Raybans. All of a sudden, the Look & Describe feature has stopped working. All the frames say now is that the AI is a voice only assistant. Even when I turn on my VPN, the feature doesn’t work.
So disappointed. I’ve been using the Look & Describe several times a day to help me identify things around the house. When will Meta get this sorted? It may be an optional luxury feature for sighted users, but for me it’s a vital part of what the glasses do.

"Suddenly I knew exactly how Arthur Dent felt, dealing with the Nutrimatic Drinks Dispenser in The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Just like the cup of tea it dispensed to Arthur, the code provided by #ChatGPT was, to paraphrase, almost, but not quite, entirely unlike the #HTML for an accessible button." by @tink

A simple question with a simple answer, yet ChatGPT had to add a little extra to spice things up

Update: moved this to my new writing site so there’s a new URL.

Every hashtag on every post on every platform should ALWAYS be pascal case. I wrote this to illustrate how screenreaders read hashtags based on their case.

It’s a small thing that all of us can do to build a more inclusive, accessible internet for all. Please take the time to use pascal case.
